Veterans Day November 11, 2007

Veterans Day Ceremony 2007 at State Capitol

(Little Rock)  The Veterans Day Ceremony held at the State Capitol rotunda proved to be a moving and meaningful day for all.  Representatives from over forty-five veteran’s organizations attended the ceremony along with state dignitaries including Governor Mike Beebe, LT Governor Bill Halter and Senator Mark Pryor.  Vernon Bynum, State Commander of the American Legion was this year’s Master of Ceremonies.  Colors were presented by the Arkansas Army National Guard Color Guard and music by the 106th Army National Guard Band.  Keynote speaker Major General William Wofford, Adjutant General of the Arkansas Army National Guard, reflected on the history of Veterans Day and World War I “. . . the war that was supposed to have ended all wars . . . in every era since, freedom has been threatened and each new generation has stepped forward in freedoms defense.”  He ended by saying, “Veterans, America truly owes you a debt of gratitude.”

Eighty-nine years ago, on the 11th day of the 11th month at 11 am 1918 (Paris time) the armistice (or truce) came into effect.  The actual signing took place that day at 5 am between the allies and Germany ending WWI.

In 1938 Congress passed a bill that November 11 be known as Armistice Day.

The name was changed to Veterans Day by Act of Congress May 24, 1954 to honor all veterans.
