Director of the
Arkansas Department of Veterans AffairsDavid Fletcher was appointed Director of the Arkansas Department of Veterans Affairs on February 9, 2007 by Governor Mike Beebe. Mr. Fletcher is a 29-year veteran of the United States Air Force, retiring with the rank of Chief Master Sergeant. Following his military retirement, he returned to his birthplace of Monette, Arkansas where he served eight years as Mayor.
Prior to his retirement from the Air Force, he was the ranking non-commissioned officer for many national and international programs
relating to the military postal system. At the Pentagon, he headed a
$44-million postal operation for the Air Force. While stationed in the
United Kingdom,
Mr. Fletcher oversaw the postal system that serviced
U.S. military personnel throughout Europe, the Middle East and North
Africa.
Mr. Fletcher spent 14 years as the Craighead County Veterans Service Officer and is a member of
the American Legion, the Air Force Association and Disabled American Veterans. He has served
as Adjutant of the American Legion Abner Blankenship Post #136 in Monette, Arkansas.
While Mayor of Monette, he served as a member on various boards including the Craighead County "Crime stoppers", Northeast Arkansas Transportation (NEAT), and Crowley's Ridge Development Council (CRDC). He completed the Arkansas State University Regional Leaders Program and later completed the Mid-South Delta Leaders Program sponsored by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation/Mid-South Delta Initiative which included participants from Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississippi.
Mr. Fletcher currently serves as President for the National Association of State Directors of Veterans Affairs. He was also Co-Vice Chair of the Governor's Arkansas Yellow Ribbon Task Force which focuses on issues relating to Arkansas veterans.
Mr. Fletcher was born on December 7, 1941, the day of the attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.
